Beautiful Beginnings and Celebrated Closings

Posted on March 15, 2013

The saying that, “as one door closes, another opens” rings true for us here at Mixed Blood. At the Firehouse we welcomed the cast of IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES on Monday and will say goodbye to the wonderful cast of ELEMENO PEA on Sunday.

IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES, our 14th bi-lingual production, is the stage adaptation of the famous Julia Alvarez novel. The story revolves around the four Mirabal sisters, political martyrs during the Trujillo era in the Dominican Republic. Performed in Spanish and English (with translated supertitles in both languages), the play is written by Caridad Svich, author of Mixed Blood’s 2010 play based on Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits. Our production will be the first bi-lingual production of the play. The play had previously been produced, solely in Spanish, by Repertorio Espanol, a company in New York City. The play was directed by José Zayas and he will direct our production, as well.

ELEMENO PEA will close out it’s very successful run this Sunday. Be it the stellar acting, the great story-telling by Molly Smith Metzler, or the ability to get away from the cold and grey Minnesota winter and spend 90 minutes in Martha’s Vineyard, audiences have enjoyed the show. It’ll be a bitter-sweet final curtain on Sunday.

The final performance will be accompanied by our final panel conversation in the #LMNOPmbt Salon Series. Professors Karen-Sue Taussig and William Beeman, from the University of Minnesota’s Anthropology Department, will give us a little insight to what life is REALLY like on Martha’s Vineyard. Bring your pink salmon pants and join us for a great discussion and send the show off properly!
